Ms. Woo Mei Hui is an educational psychologist who has had experience in various schools and settings, ranging from special needs, gifted education, primary school, secondary school, Junior College, hospital, private clinic, VWO, research, and university wellness centre. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with Sociology at the University of Bath, UK, and did a one year placement at the University of Oxford, Department of Educational Studies as a research assistant with the Families, Children and Child Care Project studying the short and medium-term effects of child care on the children’s development. Her dissertation topic was “Are parents good assessors of children’s language?: Concurrent and predictive validity of a parental report measure of language” for which she obtained a distinction. She was awarded a Bursary to study her Masters in Developmental Psychopathology (with distinction) from the University of Reading, UK. Her masters dissertation topic was “Maternal post-partum depression: the continuity of its effects on the socio-emotional development of their children at 16 years.” She returned to Singapore in 2004 and has worked with children and adolescents ever since.
Ms. Woo started out working as a psychologist at two different special education schools for over 3 years, before going on to work as a psychologist in a school offering the Integrated Programme for over a decade. She went back to school in 2013 to do her Masters in Applied Psychology (Educational Psychology track) at NIE, Singapore after receiving a partial sponsorship (Reimbursement of Postgraduate Course Fees) from her employer. Her dissertation subject was on evaluating a Homework, Organisation, and Planning Skills (HOPS) intervention for students and its impact on academic performance. She became a registered psychologist with the Singapore Psychological Society in 2017.
Ms. Woo does psychological assessment for learning needs such as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as providing intervention and therapy for children and teenagers experiencing other mental health issues and conditions. She is trained to administer the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R), and she is a Singapore Abilities Scale certified user. Ms. Woo has completed her Certificate in Autism awarded by the Autism Resource Centre. In addition, Ms. Woo is a fully qualified and accredited administrator of the Strong Instrument and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument.
Ms. Woo is certified in Choice Theory and Reality Therapy. She is currently working towards her certification in Schema Therapy. Besides Schema Therapy, Ms. Woo has undergone extensive training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Ms. Woo has received training in other therapeutic modalities, such as Internal Family Systems, Solution Focused Coaching, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Transformational Chairwork, Positive Psychology, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, as well as in Suicide Intervention, Youth Mental Health First Aid and Psychological First Aid and Trauma informed approaches. Ms. Woo is passionate about learning more and teaching others about psychology, and helping children and youths. She is very experienced in giving talks targeted at parents and youth. She has gone for Parenting with Confidence facilitator training (13 – 19 year old module) and Good Enough Parenting Professional training level 2. Ms. Woo previously presented at the NIE Graduate Student Conference 15 October 2016 on “The Homework, Organisation, and Planning Skills (HOPS) intervention for academically at-risk secondary school students”.
