We have got the answers to your questions
Q: When should I seek help for mental health concerns? A: Seek help if you’re struggling with overwhelming feelings of sadness, hopelessness, irritability, anxiety, stress, or experiencing troubling changes in sleep, appetite, concentration, or energy levels that are negatively impacting your daily life.
Q: How do I know if I need to see a psychiatrist or a psychologist or a counsellor/therapist? A: A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is able to advise you on and prescribe psychiatric medication if it’s clinically indicated. They can also provide therapy although their typical focus is on medication management. Psychologists and counsellors/therapists are both trained in various therapeutic techniques and focus on providing what is commonly referred to as “talk therapy” for issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, addiction, etc. Psychologists differ from therapists in that they received further training in clinical diagnosis and psychological testing.
If you’re still not sure who you need to see, please contact us so that we can assist you in the process. All of our clinicians are keen on working with you to get you the help you need and will refer you to the appropriate colleagues if both therapy and medication are indicated.
Q: What should I expect when I see a mental health professional for the first time? A: Your clinician will conduct a thorough assessment of your current concerns and relevant background history. You’ll be able to share your goals for treatment and work collaboratively on a suitable treatment plan.
Q: How do I find the right clinician for me? A: Consider factors such as their areas of specialization, professional/academic training, therapeutic approaches used, types of experience, and personality. Please visit their profiles as it’s important to feel comfortable and connected with your clinician.
Q: How can I schedule an appointment? A: You can book an appointment here (insert hyperlink to the contact us page; https://promises.com.sg/contact-us/), or call us at +65 6397 7309.
Q: What are your hours of operation? A: Promises is open on the following days: – Mondays to Fridays – 9am to 6pm – Saturdays – 9am to 3pm
Certain clinicians may also offer sessions outside of the standard clinic operating hours. Please inquire directly with our Front Desk Team for specific clinician availability should you require a session outside of these hours.
Q: Do you offer telehealth services? A: Yes, we do. Please get in touch via our contact us page for more information.
Q: What is psychological testing? A: Psychological testing involves the use of standardized tests to assess various aspects of mental functioning, such as personality, cognitive abilities, and emotional well-being. The most common psychological tests we carry out at our clinic are for neurodevelopmental issues such as ADHD, Autism, and other learning disorders. We also conduct assessments for neurocognitive issues (e.g., cognitive decline) and PTSD.
Q: Who administers psychological assessments? A: Clinical psychologists, Clinical Neuropsychologists, and Educational Psychologists are qualified to administer and interpret psychological tests.
Q: How can psychological testing help me? A: Psychological testing can provide valuable insights into your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth, treatment planning, and self-understanding. However, the primary use at our clinic is for diagnosing specific conditions in order to access educational resources or if needed for legal reasons.
Q: When should I consider therapy for my child? A: If your child is struggling with anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, or any other emotional difficulties, therapy can be beneficial.
Q: How do I find the right therapist for my child? A: It is highly recommended that you review the clinician’s profiles to determine whether they have specialized training and experience in working with children and adolescents. The therapist-client fit is difficult to predict without a first consultation but rest assured that our clinicians are prepared to guide you through the process at that first visit.
Q: How can I help my child get the most out of therapy? A: Be supportive, encourage open communication as much as your child is comfortable with doing so, and engage with the therapist about what is working or might not be working.
Q: How many sessions will my child need? A: This depends on the child’s needs and treatment progress. The therapist will be better able to advise you on this after a few sessions of gathering information and exploring the scope of the issues.
Q: How does couples counselling work? A: Couples counselling involves regular sessions with the therapist as a couple. The goal is to facilitate a discussion about their concerns, help couples improve their relationship by exploring different perspectives and addressing communication problems, resolve conflict, and rebuild intimacy.
Q: When is it a good time to seek couples counselling? A: If you and your partner are feeling disconnected, arguing frequently, or facing challenges in your relationship, couples counselling can be helpful.
Q: What can we expect in couples counselling sessions? A: A therapist will facilitate discussions, help you identify underlying issues, and teach you healthy communication and conflict-resolution skills.
Q: Can couples counselling save a relationship? A: While couples counselling can be very effective, the outcome of therapy depends on both partners’ end-goal, and their willingness to participate and make changes as a couple.
Q: Will my information be kept confidential? A: Yes, what you discuss with your clinician is kept strictly confidential with certain limitations. You may also be asked by your clinician for your consent so that they can request or disclose information in the course of your treatment (e.g., requesting your consent to speak with other medical or mental health providers).
Q: What are the limits of confidentiality in mental health treatment in Singapore? A: Confidentiality is protected with a few key exceptions. Disclosure (without your consent) may be necessary if you’re a danger to yourself or others, if there’s suspected abuse of a child or elderly person, or by court order.
Q: My child is under 18. Will the clinician tell me everything my child discusses with them? A: We value every client’s right to and preference for privacy. In the case of clients of minor age, we recognize the parents/caregivers’ concerns and need for information to help their child to the best of their abilities. To address the needs of both client and parent, boundaries and expectations are usually addressed at the first visit so that everyone’s on the same page about what the clinician might share, how often they will share it, and what they will keep private.
