Autism Testing

Autism Diagnosis and the Benefit of Early Intervention

What is Autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions evidenced by difficulties in communicating, social interaction, restricted interests, repetitive behaviours, and other symptoms that impede one’s ability to function properly in various areas of life.

Autism consists of many subtypes. Hence, it is now acknowledged as a spectrum disorder which is mostly influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges.

The methods by which people with ASD learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may have to rely on others to carry out their daily tasks, whereas others may need less support and, in some instances, live entirely independently.

Several aspects may influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal disorders, seizures or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.

Identifying Autism Early is Crucial

According to research conducted by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the National University Hospital in 2016, it was revealed that 1 in 150 children in Singapore have autism. This figure is higher than the World Health Organisation’s global figure of 1 in 160 children.

Indicators of autism usually appear in a child between ages 2 and 3. Certain associated development delays may appear even earlier and can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.
