Autism Testing

Autism Diagnosis and the Benefit of Early Intervention

What is Autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions evidenced by difficulties in communicating, social interaction, restricted interests, repetitive behaviours, and other symptoms that impede one’s ability to function properly in various areas of life.

Autism consists of many subtypes. Hence, it is now acknowledged as a spectrum disorder which is mostly influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges.

The methods by which people with ASD learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may have to rely on others to carry out their daily tasks, whereas others may need less support and, in some instances, live entirely independently.

Several aspects may influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal disorders, seizures or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.

Identifying Autism Early is Crucial

According to research conducted by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the National University Hospital in 2016, it was revealed that 1 in 150 children in Singapore have autism. This figure is higher than the World Health Organisation’s global figure of 1 in 160 children.

Indicators of autism usually appear in a child between ages 2 and 3. Certain associated development delays may appear even earlier and can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.

What To Expect For An Autism (ASD) Assessment at Promises Healthcare?

The Assessment Process:

At Promises Healthcare, we prioritize an initial evaluation with the parent(s) to gather vital information about the child’s concerns and symptoms related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

  • Depending on the specific concerns, we administer relevant tests during scheduled sessions. The testing process typically spans two or more sessions, totaling approximately 6 to 12 hours. However, the exact duration may vary based on the child’s individual needs and capabilities.
  • To ensure the child’s comfort and minimize fatigue and stress, we may opt to spread out the testing over multiple days.
  • Once all the testing is completed, our team prepares a comprehensive written report based on the assessment and testing outcomes. This report offers valuable insights into the child’s strengths and challenges, accompanied by recommendations tailored for both home and school environments.
  • To ensure clarity and address any queries, we schedule a feedback session for parents. During this session, parents have the opportunity to discuss the report in detail, ask questions, and seek further clarification on any aspects they would like to better understand.

At Promises Healthcare, our aim is to provide a thorough and informative Autism (ASD) testing experience. We are dedicated to supporting parents in comprehending their child’s needs and providing appropriate recommendations and therapy for their overall well-being and success.

Fees

At the initial consultation session, the psychologist will have a discussion with parents regarding the charges for the assessment, which will depend on the specific needs of the child or person and the tests that are required. The charges usually range from SGD$1,800 to SGD$2,800, but this can vary depending on the complexity of the assessment required.
